wych elm x D2D MIXTAPES

Next up to deliver a D2D Mixtape is wych elm!

Picked as an “artist to check out at D2D” on our last mixtape by Sad Boys Club, the grungy indie rock band have just released their first single in 2 years, listen to the brilliant ‘Scolds Bridle’ as song one and continue the playlist for their selected tracks.

THE MOST RECENT TRACK YOU RELEASED

Caitlin: Scolds Bridle. It’s been our first release in two years so we’re really excited about it, it’s also a great one to play live. It’s named after a torture device from medieval times. It was a dark part of our history that shouldn’t be forgotten, and while we no longer have the “scolds bridle” we still have abusers that will do whatever it takes to silence the abused.

A SONG THAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ARTIST

Caitlin: Polly by Nirvana. I started listening to Nevermind around 12 years old as my dad gave me his CD when I started getting into music. I’d already been desperate to play guitar for as long as I could remember, but hearing this song gave me a whole new level of determination to learn.

A SONG FROM THE BEST BAND YOU’VE SEEN LIVE

Caitlin: Break My Body by the Pixies. I saw them at Motorpoint in Cardiff. Initially, I was worried about seeing my favourite band when they were no longer in their prime, but I was so wrong. They are still incredible performers and played all my favourite songs of theirs.

A SONG FROM YOUR TEEN YEARS

Caitlin: Teen Idle by Marina. I had to pick this one for this question, I was obsessed with Electra Heart when I was a pre-teen and my love for Marina only grew throughout my teenage years. I would be lying if I said her music had no effect on my music. I think the lyrics are very raw and honest, and it taught me I could be just as open in my music.

A SONG YOU’D ENTER A BOXING RING TO

Caitlin: People Are Strange by The Doors. I’ve wanted this to be our walk on song for a while, but sound engineers never ask what you’d like to walk on to. So it may seem like a strange choice to others, but it seems like an obvious choice to me.

A SONG THAT WOULD PLAY IN THE TRAILER OF YOUR BIOPIC

Issy: All Flowers in Time Bend Towards The Sun by Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser. I love the idea that in time, you are naturally drawn to where you’re meant to be, and you’ll end up sitting in the sun in a nice meadow.

A SONG YOU’D PLAY TO ALIENS

Jack: Ziwzih Ziwzih OO-OO-OO by Delia Derbyshire. Probably our best shot at impressing the star fairing aliens that have figured out lightspeed.

A SONG YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO COVER

Caitlin: He War by Cat Power. If there was also “A song you wish you’d written” question this would be the same answer. I just think it’s perfect, and I’d love to jam it on stage one day.

A SONG FROM THE ARTIST YOU ARE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO CHECKING OUT AT D2D

Connie: Always Happy by Grandma’s House because they always put on the most energetic show and Yas’ voice is one of the most unique voices I’ve heard in my time. It’s husky voices and fuzzy guitars, could it get much better?

YOUR ABSOLUTE GUILTY PLEASURE

Caitlin: Cosmic Girl by Jamiroquai. No matter the time or place if this came on the speakers I’d be singing along.

Big thanks to Wych Elm for taking part, you can listen to the playlist in full here.
