SAD BOYS CLUB x D2D MIXTAPES

Continuing our D2D Mixtapes series is none other than Sad Boys Club! Sweeping people off of their feet with their emo-infused indie rock, we’re very excited to have the guys playing at Dot To Dot this year.

The band’s vocalist Jacob Wheldon actually decided to pick his mixtape from our long list of D2D alumni, so naturally we love this list! Plug in your headphones and let’s go on a journey.

THE MOST RECENT TRACK YOU RELEASED

It’s a song called ‘What Is It Like to Be a Bat?’ – the title is taken from a Thomas Nagel essay to do with the phenomenological features of subjective experience, but our song is at least as if not more concerned with how impressed I was when Pedro passed his driving test.

A SONG THAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME AN ARTIST

There are so many; Racing in The Street, Can’t Get You Outta My Head, Pictures of You, Ride into The Sun all come to mind immediately. I think I’m going to try and answer all of these with Dot to Dot alumni because it makes it more entertaining for me. Bloc Party ‘So Here We Are’.

A SONG FROM THE BEST BAND YOU’VE SEEN LIVE

‘1998 (Delicious)’ – Peace. Brixton Academy however, many years ago was a very special show to be at. If, dear reader, you are somehow unfamiliar with this track, I’ll be explicit: it goes off. Nuclear. Back of the net.

A SONG FROM YOUR TEEN YEARS

Another band I might’ve gone for on the last question is Late of the Pier. ‘Fantasy Black Channel’ is one of my favourite records ever, ridiculously creative, completely manic. Could go with any track on that record but let’s go ‘Bathroom Gurgle’. Insane.

A SONG YOU’D ENTER A BOXING RING TO

I’m not big and muscular but I do have exceptional control over every part of my body, all the connective tissues and nerves, I’ve got explosive twitch energy, a masterful ability to almost slow down time. I imagine myself entering not unlike Dave Chapelle’s Prince in Charlie Murphy’s stories… floating, dream-like, the glow of my aura drawing all attention my way, so I think I’d need something suitably ethereal. Something off the new Wolf Alice album – ‘How Can I Make it Ok?’ Fight with compassion.

A SONG THAT WOULD PLAY IN THE TRAILER OF YOUR BIOPIC

‘Something to Remember Me By’ – The Horrors.

A SONG YOU’D PLAY TO ALIENS

I think you’d probably want to test for a capacity for sympathy. Evan Hall from Pinegrove is one of my favourite lyricists, Cadinal is quite a solipsistic record but it’s so vulnerable and exposed to its audience, it ends up having the opposite effect to its essence if you see what I mean. ‘Aphasia’.

A SONG YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO COVER

We sometimes cover Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn if the mood is right. Would quite like to give ‘Sports’ by Viagra Boys a go. I think theirs is supposed to be ironic, but it would be dead straight for me, an honest ode to a thing I love. I love sports, I think they’re great.

A SONG FROM THE ARTIST YOU ARE MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO CHECKING OUT AT D2D

I’m really into this track School Shooter by Wych Elm

YOUR ABSOLUTE GUILTY PLEASURE

Sports Team – Here It Comes Again
